While flipping houses, Markus and Mary moved in together in their 20s, and one day, he decided it was time to rescue a dog. Mary had been volunteering at a rescue, and that’s where Markus met Salem, a sweet, ridiculously smart, well-mannered working breed who just needed a job to thrive.

Then came the TikTok rabbit hole.

One night, Mary and Markus stumbled upon mold dogs. Specially trained canines with noses 3,000 times more powerful than humans, capable of pinpointing mold growth with unmatched accuracy. That was the lightbulb moment.

They sent Salem to train with Bill Whitstine, the best in the business. While she learned the ropes, Markus stayed in Florida helping remediate his mother’s home after a brutal hurricane (because of course, mold just had to make a comeback in their lives).

Bill quickly realized Salem was a star pupil. She loved her work, had an incredible nose, and more than anything, she finally had the purpose she was born for. When she came back home, she was more confident than ever, and their mission became clear.
